Mordecai gave Esther the task of saving her people (Jews). There was a decree of destruction for the Jews that went out from Shusan. He told her to go into the inner courts when the king was (she could be put to death) and plead with him to cancel the decree to save the life of her people. He reminded her who she was and that her life would not be spared just because she is the queen.
